Who Needs a FOID Card?

Every Illinois resident who wishes to possess, purchase, or transport firearms or ammunition within the state must have a valid FOID card. This applies whether you are buying from a licensed FFL dealer, receiving a firearm as a gift, or inheriting firearms from a family member. The only exceptions are law enforcement officers on duty, military personnel on duty, and non-residents who are passing through the state in compliance with the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA).

How to Apply for Your FOID Card

Step 1: Visit the Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau (FSB) website at ispfsb.com.

Step 2: Create an account using your Illinois driver's license or state ID number.

Step 3: Complete the online application form with your personal information.

Step 4: Upload a current, passport-style photograph (head and shoulders, plain background).

Step 5: Pay the $10 application fee via credit or debit card.

Step 6: Submit your application and wait for processing.

FOID Card Renewal

Your FOID card is valid for 10 years. The ISP will send a renewal reminder approximately 6 months before your card expires. You can renew online through the same ISP portal used for the initial application. The renewal fee is $10. Do not let your FOID expire. An expired FOID means you cannot legally possess firearms or ammunition in Illinois, and any purchase or FFL transfer at a dealer will be refused until your card is renewed.

Common FOID Issues and Solutions

Application Delayed: If your application has been pending for longer than 30 days, you can check status online through the ISP portal. If it has been significantly longer, contact the ISP Firearms Services Bureau directly or reach out to your state representative's office for assistance.

Address Change: If you move within Illinois, you must update your address with the ISP within 30 days. You can do this through the online portal.

Name Change: A legal name change (marriage, divorce, court order) requires updating your FOID through the ISP portal with supporting documentation.

Lost or Stolen Card: Report a lost or stolen FOID card to the ISP immediately and request a replacement through the online portal.
